Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield said on Wednesday that his injured shoulder may have healed enough in time to start Sunday against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Mayfield has a left shoulder fracture (non-throwing) in addition to the previously reported torn labrum.
He was inactive for last Thursday’s 17-14 win over the Denver Broncos, with veteran Case Keenum taking off in his place. It was Keenum’s first starting game since 2019, when he was playing for Washington.
Mayfield said free time helped her shoulder heal.
“Definitely (it helped). A noticeable difference in range of motion and strength,” Mayfield said before training on Wednesday, according to ESPN. “Trying to regain that strength and be able to get as close to 100% as possible. But if that’s not the case, then we trust the guys we have out there.”
NFL Network had previously reported that Mayfield was due to have shoulder surgery, although he hoped to hold him until after the season.
Mayfield was first injured in week 2 and compounded the injury in a loss to the Arizona Cardinals on October 24. 17 °
Mayfield, 26, played all but four snaps in the 37-14 defeat to the Cardinals. He completed 19 of 28 passes for 234 yards with two touchdowns and an interception.
During the season, he completed 116 of 173 passes (67.1%) for 1,474 yards with six touchdowns and three interceptions.
